When living in Vietnam long-term, understanding how utilities work will help you avoid unexpected costs and service interruptions. Below is a practical overview of internet, electricity, and water services for residents and long-stay foreigners.

Internet services

Vietnam has relatively fast and affordable internet compared to many countries in the region. Both fiber broadband and mobile data are widely available, especially in urban areas like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Major providers

The main internet service providers (ISPs) include:

  • Viettel
  • VNPT
  • FPT Telecom

Most apartments in cities are already connected to fiber. Installation usually takes 1–3 working days.

Typical monthly cost

  • Basic home fiber plan: 200,000 – 350,000 VND/month
  • Higher-speed or business plan: 400,000 – 800,000 VND/month

Contracts are typically 6–12 months. Some landlords include internet in the rent.

Stability and speed

  • Urban areas: Stable, high-speed fiber (often 50–300 Mbps).
  • Rural areas: Slower speeds; occasional disruptions during storms.
  • Power outages may temporarily affect home routers unless backed by UPS systems.

If you work remotely, consider asking your landlord about backup connections or installing a 4G/5G hotspot as redundancy.

Electricity

Electricity in Vietnam is reliable in major cities, though occasional outages may occur during peak summer months.

Voltage and frequency

  • 220V / 50Hz
  • Plug types: A, C, and F are commonly used.

(For detailed plug information, see the Electricity & Power Outlets article in the First Time in Vietnam section.)

Electricity pricing

Electricity is charged on a tiered residential tariff system regulated by Vietnam Electricity (EVN).

As of 2024 (approximate residential rates):

  • Lower tiers: around 1,800 – 2,000 VND/kWh
  • Higher tiers: up to 3,000+ VND/kWh

Air conditioning significantly increases consumption. A small apartment using AC daily may pay:

  • 800,000 – 2,000,000 VND/month depending on usage

In serviced apartments, electricity may be charged at a higher fixed rate (e.g., 3,500–4,000 VND/kWh).

Payment methods

  • Bank transfer
  • Mobile banking apps
  • Payment at convenience stores
  • Direct payment through landlord

Water supply

Tap water is widely available in urban areas, but most residents do not drink tap water directly.

Is tap water safe?

In major cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, tap water is treated but may not meet drinking standards without additional filtration.

Most households use:

  • Bottled water delivery
  • Home filtration systems
  • Boiling before drinking

Water cost

Residential water is inexpensive:

  • Around 6,000 – 12,000 VND per cubic meter
  • Typical monthly bill: 50,000 – 200,000 VND for small households

In some older buildings, water pressure may be low during peak hours.

Utility setup for foreigners

If you rent an apartment:

  • Utilities are usually registered under the landlord’s name.
  • You may reimburse monthly based on meter readings.
  • Always request transparent billing if electricity is charged separately.

If you buy property:

  • You must register contracts with local utility providers.
  • Passport and residence documents may be required.

Common issues and practical tips

  • Power cuts during storms: Rare in city centers, more common in rural areas.
  • Internet cable damage: Occasionally happens due to construction work.
  • Water pressure fluctuations: Common in older districts.
  • Peak electricity usage in hot season (April–August) may increase bills significantly.

Practical advice:

  • Take photos of meter readings when moving in.
  • Clarify electricity rate per kWh in your lease.
  • Keep a small emergency light and power bank at home.
  • Consider a water purifier if staying long-term.

Overall cost of utilities in Vietnam

For a 1–2 bedroom apartment in a major city, typical monthly utility costs:

  • Electricity: 800,000 – 1,500,000 VND
  • Water: 50,000 – 200,000 VND
  • Internet: 200,000 – 400,000 VND

Estimated total: 1,100,000 – 2,100,000 VND/month (depending heavily on air conditioning use).

Compared to many Western countries, utilities in Vietnam are relatively affordable, but summer electricity consumption can surprise newcomers.
