Introduction

Gio Cave (Hang Gió) is a large limestone cave complex hidden in the mountains of Nhan Ly (Nhân Lý) Commune, Lang Son Province. With enormous chambers, cool natural airflow, and dramatic rock formations, the cave offers one of the most impressive underground landscapes in northeastern Vietnam.

Although located not far from the old National Highway 1A corridor, Gio Cave still feels quiet and relatively untouched. The destination is best suited for travelers looking for a more natural cave experience away from crowded tourist centers.

Why visit Gio Cave?

Gio Cave is known for its unusual scale compared to many caves in northern Vietnam. The chambers are wide, high, and easy to walk through, creating a spacious feeling rarely found in narrow karst caves.

The site is also attractive because it remains less commercialized than famous cave destinations elsewhere in Vietnam. Visitors can still experience quiet mountain scenery, natural cave formations, and a slower travel atmosphere.

Another advantage is the concentration of nearby caves within the same limestone range. Travelers can combine several cave stops in one trip without traveling long distances between locations.

History

Gio Cave belongs to a wider karst landscape formed over millions of years through limestone erosion and underground water activity. The cave complex stretches across the Bo Nhan (Bó Nhàn) mountain range from Sao Thuong (Sao Thượng) toward the central area of Mai Sao.

In 2004, the site was officially recognized as a National Historical and Cultural Relic by Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture and Information because of its geological and landscape value. Historically, the area was associated with Chi Lang District before later administrative restructuring removed the district-level unit and placed the site directly within Nhan Ly Commune.

The cave is also known by other names including Dong Thong Gio (Động Thông Gió) and Mai Sao Phong Dong (Mai Sao Phong Động).

The approach to the cave begins with a staircase of 392 stone steps climbing through the mountainside. The route gradually opens to wider views of limestone peaks and rural valleys.

Inside the main cave, visitors enter a vast open chamber with ceilings reaching up to 30 to 40 meters high in some areas. The cave contains two main levels and a lower section, with relatively flat ground that makes exploration easier than many rugged mountain caves.

Large stalactites and stalagmites appear throughout the cave in shapes resembling stone bells, pillars, bamboo shoots, birds, and animals. The broad vaulted ceiling gives certain sections an appearance similar to a giant natural cathedral.

Nearby caves include Hang Cong Chua, Hang Hoang Tu, Hang Thien Dinh, Hang Doi, and Dong Thuy Tien. Each cave has a slightly different atmosphere, from open chambers to darker underground spaces connected with water and bats.

Best time to visit

The most comfortable period to visit Gio Cave is from October to April, when Lang Son experiences cooler and drier weather. The staircase and cave floor are usually safer during this season.

From May to September, rain becomes more common and surfaces may become slippery. However, the surrounding mountains are greener and more vibrant during this period.

How to get there

Gio Cave is located around 34 km southwest of Lang Son City and about 4 km northwest of the old National Highway 1A route.

The easiest way to reach the cave is by motorbike or private car. Travelers from Hanoi can stop here while traveling toward Lang Son, as the cave lies relatively close to the main northbound transport corridor.

How to explore

A half-day itinerary is usually enough for most visitors. Start with the main Gio Cave first because it requires the longest staircase climb and contains the largest chambers.

After finishing the main cave, continue exploring nearby caves depending on available time and physical condition. Some smaller caves are darker and more uneven, so moving slowly is recommended.

Food services and tourist facilities around the site remain limited. Visitors should prepare water, comfortable shoes, and basic supplies before arriving.
