History

The Battle of Rach Gam - Xoai Mut took place on 20 January 1785 during the Tay Son period. At the time, a Siamese army had entered the Mekong Delta in support of Nguyen Anh, who was fighting the Tay Son forces. The Siamese army moved along the waterways of the region with a large naval force, creating a serious military threat to the Tay Son position in the south.

Nguyen Hue, one of the leading commanders of the Tay Son movement, organised a defensive operation along the Tien River near Rach Gam and Xoai Mut.
