Ngu Binh Mountain
Intro
Ngự Bình Mountain is one of the most iconic natural landmarks of Huế. The mountain rises gently on the southern side of the city and is closely associated with the poetic landscape of the Huong River (or Perfume River, or Hương Giang).
Together, the river and the mountain form the famous cultural symbol “Hương Giang – Ngự Bình”, which represents the harmony between nature and the former imperial capital.
Because of its symmetrical shape and strategic location, the mountain was chosen as the front screen mountain in the feng shui design of the imperial city during the reign of the Nguyễn dynasty.

History
Before the establishment of the imperial capital in the early 19th century, Ngự Bình Mountain was originally known as Bang Son Mountain.
When Gia Long established the capital at Huế in 1802, the mountain’s natural shape was considered ideal according to East Asian feng shui principles.
The mountain stands like a natural screen protecting the capital from the south. Because of this role, it was renamed Ngự Bình, which roughly means “the royal screen”.
On both sides of the mountain stand two smaller hills:
- Tả Phù Sơn (Left Supporting Hill)
- Hữu Bật Sơn (Right Supporting Hill)
In traditional geomancy, these two hills symbolically act as guardians protecting the imperial capital.
This natural arrangement played an important role in the planning of the nearby Hue Imperial City.
